Nyasha Mwendera
Director of Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) & Staff Development
Nyasha brings to Project Yananai over a decade of specialised expertise in monitoring, evaluation, geospatial analysis, and public health surveillance, gained through senior roles with World Health Organisation European operations and regional malaria elimination programmes across Southern Africa. As Director of Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Staff Development, she ensures that Project Yananai's impact is rigorously measured, transparently reported, and continuously improved.
A Career Dedicated to Data-Driven Impact
Nyasha currently serves as Acting Team Lead for the Pan-European Network for Disease Control at the WHO European Regional Office in Istanbul, Türkiye, where she provides strategic coordination and governance support for public health emergency preparedness across Europe. In this capacity, she leads the delivery of core strategic outputs including the Network's Strategy, Operational Plan, and Annual Reports, ensuring alignment with WHO/Europe priorities.
As Technical Officer for GIS at the same WHO office, Nyasha coordinates geospatial technical assistance and capacity-building for public health emergency operations. Her work integrates complex data sources, produces critical mapping products, and supports evidence-based decision-making in humanitarian and health emergency contexts.
Previously, as Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation Lead at the SADC Malaria Elimination 8 Initiative in Windhoek, Namibia, Nyasha designed and managed the regional M&E system that enabled the tracking of malaria elimination trends across eight Southern African countries. He was instrumental in:
Developing and implementing the E8 Strategic Plan 2021-2025 and its M&E framework
Providing spatial analysis to inform regional elimination progress
Collating and analysing surveillance data to inform senior management and global reporting
Leading evaluations of major regional initiatives and fellowships
His earlier role as Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at the same organisation saw him develop foundational M&E systems, monitor regional KPIs, prepare grant and organisational reports, and conduct operational research that directly informed programme adaptation.
Academic Foundation and Technical Expertise
Nyasha holds an MSc. in GIS and Earth Observation in Natural Resources Management from the University of Twente Faculty of ITC in the Netherlands, and a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) in Land Conservation and Reclamation from Bindura University of Science Education. She has further strengthened her analytical capabilities through a Mathematical Modelling for Infectious Diseases Short Course at the University of Cape Town's Modelling and Simulation Hub, Africa (MASHA).
Her technical proficiency spans ArcGIS, QGIS, R, Maxent, and the full Microsoft Office suite, enabling sophisticated spatial analysis and data visualisation that translates complex information into actionable insights for decision-makers.
A Contributor to the Evidence Base
Nyasha has authored and contributed to numerous high-impact reports and peer-reviewed publications, including:
The provision of malaria services in border districts of four countries in Southern Africa (Malaria Journal, 2023)
SADC Malaria Elimination Eight Initiative Annual Reports (2017–2022)
E8 Strategic Plan: 2021–2025
Regional Scorecards and Surveillance Bulletins (2018–2022)

He has also provided M&E consultancy to Youth Combating Neglected Tropical Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya, conducting baseline surveys and monitoring project activities.
A Leader for Project Yananai's Learning Agenda
Nyasha's unique combination of global health surveillance experience, geospatial expertise, and M&E systems design positions him perfectly to lead Project Yananai's Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning agenda. She will ensure that our Integrated Theory of Change is not only implemented but rigorously tested, that our impact is credibly demonstrated to donors and partners, and that our staff are equipped with the learning and development opportunities they need to excel.
