Edward Nyambawaro
Regional Director - Southern Africa
Edward is an accomplished development leader, strategist, and change agent with over two decades of international experience across Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia Pacific, and Central Asia. As Project Yananai’s Regional Director for Southern Africa, Edward brings unparalleled expertise in managing complex, multi-sectoral donor-funded programs and driving transformational development in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Edward’s distinguished career spans leadership roles with international organizations and partnerships involving The World Bank Group, USAID, PEPFAR, CDC, DFID, Global Fund, UNDP, and the African Union Commission. His extensive portfolio includes public sector reforms, governance, global and public health, health systems strengthening, human and institutional capacity development, pre-service education, in-service training, educational scholarships, job creation, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment. He is also highly experienced in humanitarian emergency response, organizational change, project management, monitoring and evaluation, donor engagement, poverty alleviation, and community-led solutions.
A proven leader in conflict, fragile, and high-risk settings, Edward has directed large-scale programs across more than 14 countries, partnering with governments, multilateral agencies, donors, private sector, foundations, faith-based and civil society organizations, and community leaders. He is recognized for his high-level negotiation skills, stakeholder engagement, and ability to mobilize resources for maximum impact. Edward is a passionate advocate for gender equity and integration, and is deeply committed to mentoring future leaders and fostering collaborative learning and adaptation.
Edward has served in executive and advisory capacities on global, regional, and country leadership teams, including as Acting Global Director for Multisector Programmes and Regional Director for East Africa in leading international organizations. He has led teams through organizational restructuring and change management, delivered results in post-conflict and high-stress environments, and championed evidence-based research and analytics to inform policy and practice.
In academia, Edward serves as an MBA dissertations supervisor and external examiner at Wits Business School, University of Witwatersrand, and as a reviewer for professional training modules. He holds an MSc in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Beckett University (UK), with additional qualifications in organizational development, training management, and business management.
Edward is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ), fluent in English, and has working proficiency in Arabic and French. His career is marked by a strong passion for transformational development, community participation, coaching and mentorship, and delivering sustainable solutions tailored to the unique contexts of the Southern African region.
