Dr Tendai Nkomo
Public Health Specialist - Health Systems & Community Health
Dr. Tendai Nkomo is a seasoned Medical Doctor and Public Health Specialist with over 11 years’ experience advancing impactful, evidence-based health programs across Southern Africa. He is recognized for his leadership in infectious and non-communicable diseases, with particular expertise in HIV, tuberculosis (TB), drug-resistant TB (DRTB), and related comorbidities. Dr. Nkomo has made substantial contributions to national and regional health systems, focusing on health systems strengthening, epidemic response, and the development of clinical policies and strategic guidelines.
Dr. Nkomo’s career spans high-level technical assistance to ministries of health, international donors, and organizations including the Global Fund, WHO, UNDP, CDC, and USAID. He has successfully led multi-country initiatives, advanced TB and HIV care through innovative diagnostics and quality improvement projects, and has built the capacity of healthcare workforces through training, mentorship, and the development of blended learning models.
As Technical Advisor for TB and Research with the Ministry of Health and CDC in Eswatini, Dr. Nkomo provides strategic support for TB/DRTB program development, clinical advisory committee coordination, grant acquisition and management, and epidemic response. Previously, as Program Officer for Drug-Resistant TB in Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health, he managed national TB and DRTB programs, secured and implemented multi-donor grants, and led the development of essential national guidelines and algorithms. He has also held clinical roles as Medical Officer and Resident Medical Officer, delivering comprehensive care across multiple specialties and managing both communicable and non-communicable diseases in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Nkomo holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Johannesburg and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Zimbabwe. He is a published researcher, policy contributor, and guideline developer, with work appearing in the Pan African Medical Journal and as part of international best practice field guides. His technical strengths include health systems management, surveillance, grant writing, MEL, and the integration of quality improvement into program delivery.
An effective collaborator and communicator, Dr. Nkomo is skilled at stakeholder engagement, multi-sectoral coordination, and the translation of research findings into actionable policy. He is adept with digital health technologies, virtual collaboration platforms, and advanced data analysis tools such as SPSS.
At Project Yananai Zimbabwe, Dr. Tendai Nkomo leads on health systems and community health—driving innovation, capacity building, and evidence-based strategies to improve health outcomes for vulnerable and underserved populations. His commitment to equity, sustainability, and continuous learning makes him a pivotal force in advancing public health impact across Zimbabwe and the region.
